Jay Bhagirath, CPA, CA

Since starting my first public accounting practice in 1986, every day has brought a different challenge and has kept me on my toes. You could say that I’ve ‘seen it all’ when it comes to solving accounting and tax challenges.

Over the course of my career, twice I have successfully built accounting firms from the ground up. My wife, also a CGA, was my partner in the first firm and a big contributor to its success. We were a family business serving many family businesses. I believe my client’s loyalty comes from my excitement and genuine interest in supporting them in their success.

While my career path also led me to work within larger firms, including advancing my way up to an Associate Partner role at Price Waterhouse & Coopers, my passion has always been having my own practice and working with family-owned businesses.

As I approach retirement, I want to ensure that our clients are going to be cared for in the ways they have come to expect from my team and myself. I began my search for a people-focused firm that shared the same values, where there would be little change and a comfortable transition for our clients. I wanted our clients to feel at ease in the hands of this next generation of advisors. Sangha Tone fit that profile. I saw a lot of my firm reflected in Sangha Tone’s culture and values– the whole team is personable, easy to get along with and dedicated to helping their clients grow.

Some clients have been with me for over 30 years. I’ve had the pleasure of helping many of them setup their business structures, advise them on growth strategies and design their succession plans to hand their family business over to the next generation.

My focus with clients is to help them develop a sense of ease within their business. I believe there are three pivotal things that support this: understanding, efficiency and connection. With these three qualities, we make ourselves available when clients need us and support their requests in a timely fashion, allowing them to remain focused on what’s most important in their business.

Fun Facts

If I hadn’t moved to Canada, I would likely still be a botanist. I have a master’s degree in Botany but, in Canada, it was a fading profession. There weren’t a lot of job opportunities that would allow me to support my family. Fortunately, I found another profession I was just as passionate about.

When not at work, you can find me spending time with my family. My wife and I love to travel the world and I enjoy learning about and experiencing the history of a place. When my family is all together, my favourite pastime is playing with my grandchildren or watching hockey with my sons. As much as I like hockey and being a Canucks season ticket holder, the sport of cricket runs deep in my blood. I’ve carried this passion with me after migrating from India 45 years ago. One of my dreams is to follow the Indian cricket team around the world.

When To Call Me

The majority of my accounting career has been focused on working with family businesses. I’ve helped entrepreneurs build and grow companies from nothing more than an idea, to growing it and eventually passing the business on to the next generation. If you need help with a succession plan for your business, I’d welcome the opportunity to work with you. And, of course, I’m always happy to assist with anything in-between.
